RedBubble just denied my latest art piece before it was even public due to a takedown order from BMW....

...that was hours of work wasted :(

I didn’t use their company fonts, or logos for BMW or Mini....I DID use the ‘SMITHS’ logo, but that company isn’t even related to BMW in any way...

The only reason I can think that they denied it was because I literally used the words ‘Mini Cooper S’....?

Pretty bummed as that’s a lot of time and effort down the drain for nothing.....and yet things like these (check out the first row - !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! ) are still up for publicly for sale on their site from other users and yet mine was taken down? :(

That stucks, bloody Geeermans! I have some images I wanted to put on there just so I could make my own shirts, not even make them like you do. I follow Sumo etc.. and there are not many shirts out there. I’m not very good with that stuff haha. I can only put sticky graphics on things, not the computer part...

It seems like those large companies can just issue take down orders Willy Jilly with no reason and they do tbhave to give a reason. It really screws over the creators. Like videos of driving a car with fake engine noise piped in through the cabin. I know a few of those have had the copyrighted engine note lead to their video getting taken down. Really sucks since you weren’t violating their rules.

Also, I really really like that design. That might just be your best yet.

Thing is, those don’t enter into it as ‘Smiths’ is in no way affiliated with BMW - the takedown order came from BMW, not Smiths, so those logos being on there doesn’t even matter!

Yeah, I use reference images and then hand-draw the gauges over again with a mouse on my laptop and desktop in Inkscape so I can’t be called out for using somebody elses’ picture.

I was pretty good at drawing and painting years ago, I even got a computer drawing pad a while back. I just don’t know how to get all the formats and layers blah blah... I always get into some situation I can’t fix and then I have to read crap on the internet for an hour. I mostly want to use old images that nobody owns, a couple old SR- 71 pics I found are cool too.

I got an ‘acquired’ copy of Photoshop CS4 YEARS ago that I still have and sortof cut my teeth on. I don’t ‘acquire’ software anymore, so al the software I try to use is either free, or open-source, or both.. Inkscape, despite being free, is supposed to be one of the best vector graphics programs our there and is great because you can resize vector graphics to any size with no quality loss, which is why doing these is great. If I use a low-res pic as a reference, I can still then blow it up to a huge resolution (like...4000x4000 pixels) and the quality will still be perfect.

But do they own the rights to the old BLM Cooper? I might try it with a different wording. Maybe Austin Mini or something or drop the S. It's probably an algorithm that did it so you have to avoid word combinations.

SAIC has the rights to Austin and Morris now, so that might get through. The Chinese aren't as obsessive about trademark protections.

I usually use the model code and a nickname....I have 5 other designs up (classic FIAT 500, Renault 4, Trabant. Citroen 2CV, classic VW Beetle), so, for example...the upload of the Renault 4 still has ‘Renault 4' in the title of the DESIGN, but the design, itself, says “R4 - ‘Quatrelle’” (which was the French nickname for the Renault 4).

Part of the thing is that the clusters varied from model to model. The Cooper S had a 120mph speedo, the normal Mini had like, a 90mph speedo, so if I couldn’t label is as the Cooper S, it wouldn’t be correct because my design is an ‘S’ cluster.

I responded to challenge and ask why as it was based on my own picture and no logos were used, but RedBubble said that they will not provide reasons why and that If I wanted to fight the take down that I would need to lawyer up and go after Pors c he. So, of course I can’t do that and away it went. Thanks, corporate overlords!

But no, I’ve never reuploaded any that were taken down although if i did remove logos I’d probably be OK

That would be the easiest, but the words are nice to have, since not everyone who sees it on the wall will immediately recognize what car its from, the explanation adds some interest.
